Rin Johnson and Ser Serpas’ work discovers intersections between poetry and sculpture, exploring translation, augmentation, and anti-portraiture.
Or else, the women play the game presents a performance inside of a castle of the artists' own making. Drawing on Monique Wittig’s Les Guérillères, Johnson and Serpas resurface Wittig’s epic desire for the total rupture of masculinist culture by the hands, knives, laughter, rocket launchers, and minds of female warriors.
As the castle protects the women in Wittig’s classic, here the artists conceal themselves within their own castle, a structure assembled with royal blue football mesh. Serpas draws as Johnson reads the bloody battle of creating and sustaining freedom. The building of one’s castle unveils itself as a gesture for queer world-making.
